Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Costume Change

Yes, it's that time again!
Time for me to change out of my cowgirl clothes and don my biker chick wardrobe.
But, it's that very, VERY special time of year, when it's not just changing my boots and slipping on my leather jacket.
This time, I get to go A.L.L out and pull out various bits of wardrobe that are entirely unacceptable to wear. Things that a woman my age should not be wearing.
But items that are not only accepted...but mandatory! Hehehehe-that's my excuse and I am sticking to it!

It's none other than the "granddaddy of them all"...The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally!!!
The bikes have been rolling through for days. The interstate is bumper to bumper in the west bound lane!
You see lots and lots of things...
Hmmm, what do you think? Doctor? Or lawyer?
See, there is a mandatory dress code...

Future V-Twin Motorcycle Design

There's a wealth of motorcycle design talent out there with great ideas and here's another, this one by designer Jon Pugh. It's what he calls the Saurabi F1200, powered by a Harley Davidson 1200cc V-Twin. The seat has a range of adjustment up and down to accommodate riders of many sizes, including women who usually have shorter stature than the average male and often have trouble fitting on the standard bikes offered for sale. In fact, one of the ideas behind this design was specifically to make the same kind of motorcycle available to women who are not looking for a "women's bike," they just want a motorcycle.

This design, like the NERO we featured here, was a senior design thesis project. Interesting work, to be sure and a good sign the new guys coming up have enough fresh ideas to keep our showrooms interesting for many years to come.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

In a few weeks, I will fire up the Harley and ride to what may be one of the largest outdoor events in the world. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is held each year in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. It began in 1938 as an event for motorcycle races and stunts and has topped over 630,000 people. This year the bands include Ozzy Osbourne, Kid Rock, Motley Crue, Doobie Brothers, Scorpions and many others. Riding the Black Hills is an unbelievable experience. People from all over the world come every year to participate in a party that is a bikers dream.

2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R vs. 2011 BMW S1000RR

Recently, we moved this duel to the street – an environment we often hear speculated as the place most purchased sportbikes spend their days. And it’s in a street setting the 10R has proved itself a desirable machine despite finishing a close second to the Beemer at the track.
2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R vs. 2011 BMW S1000RR
Ridin’ in the Real World
Where traffic control devices, law enforcement officers and snarled traffic rule the day, what’s more valuable most of the time from an engine is its low and midrange performance rather than triple-digit horsepower figures. It was one of these real-world variables – a typically packed L.A. freeway on a Friday afternoon – that gave me an opportunity to fully appreciate the ZX’s engine.

2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R vs. 2011 BMW S1000RRWill the S-RR remain atop the liter world after we compare it a second time to the Ninja?
This was our first street ride of the new, technology-laden 10R, and after dozens of lane-shared miles aboard the Ninja I came away happy as a clam with how well the engine chugged along effortlessly through the traffic-choked concrete artery.
With speeds dipping as low as 30 mph, and the engine rpm barely registering a pulse between 2500 and 3500 rpm, the 10R pulled 6th gear without breaking a sweat.
I rolled into the throttle smoothly, yet with authority, at these low speeds and in the tallest gear. The Kawasaki’s 998cc inline-Four gave the slightest shudder and grumble, but only for a thousand or so rpm, as if to indicate it wasn’t taxed in the least. From there on it was nothing but seamless, linear power that moved the 10R forward with deliberate force.
Now a year later since we last sampled the S1000RR in the mean streets, would we enjoy the BMW’s most-powerful-in-class mill as much as we did the 10R’s?
Yes. Mostly.

2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R vs. 2011 BMW S1000RRThe 10R looks to redeem itself from a narrow loss at the racetrack.

We know from dyno runs the BMW wins the power game across the board. As such it exhibits the same useful and exhilarating power characteristics as described above about the Ninja – and then some. Furthermore, the Beemer lump reveals its stouter midrange when dicing up tight canyon roads.
“The BMW definitely has an edge in torque that’s felt when exiting slow-speed corners,” remarked Troy.
A minor issue tempering enthusiasm for the Beemer’s engine is abrupt throttle response when selectable four-mode engine mapping is set to Slick.
For street testing we used a different S1000RR than the one used at the track. We experienced the throttle issue on both bikes, so we’re inclined to say this somewhat snatchy throttle is common to all S1000RRs.
“The abrupt fueling is more tolerable in Race mode,” observed Troy. “It doesn’t hit as hard as it does when you open the throttle in Slick mode.” This was the same solution we applied to the S-RR at the racetrack. The milder power development in Race mode is hardly perceptible and a small price to pay for throttle response noticeably smoother than when in Slick mode.

2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R vs. 2011 BMW S1000RRThe BMW’s power and torque advantage give it an edge when exiting slow-speed turns.

Motorcycle Bigest

gunbus 580
I’d love to see this monster rolling down Sturgis Main Street during the 2010 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It would definitely turn some heads — not an easy thing to do in the midst of the world’s largest gathering of bikers.
You have very expensive custom bikes parked all over the place. You have tattooed men with horn hats. You have dogs with goggles. You have women wearing practically nothing. And then there’s the guy who drags a wooden cross up and down Main Street every year. It all blurs together in a colorful carnival of sights, sounds and smells.
But this big bike would stop traffic even in Sturgis. At more than 11 feet long, the GUNBUS 410 is the world’s largest running motorcycle, according to its maker, Leonhardt Manufacturing of Eppingen, Germany.
The GUNBUS is powered by a 410-cubic-inch V-2 engine. The rear tire is 42 inches in diameter. But the seat is 32 inches, so you really can ride it. (But I’d hate to try parking it in Sturgis.)
Leonhardt built the GUNBUS prototype in 2008. The company said it will produce the bikes in a small series — the only thing small about this motorcycle.

Ducati Streetfighter Motorcycle

Ducati Streetfighter

Part racer, part streetbike, all Ducati. The Ducati Streetfighter ($TBA) offers riders an upright riding position, with plenty of power coming from its 1099cc, L-Twin cylinder, 155hp engine. Other features include twin stainless mufflers stacked on the right side for added effect, a slightly-exposed tubular steel Trellis frame, 10-spoke wheels, Brembo front disc brakes, and minimalist controls, instrumentation, and headlights. Ryu would approve.
